She still had a worried face, but she was comforted a little with Lux's words. "Okay. Just, just make sure nothing happens, okay?" she asked, biting her lip. "I really don't want my head to go underwater..."
Gulping, she pushed her feet off the water and leaned back. Of course, as soon as she was laying down, she started to sink. Too nervous and tense, silly girl.

"Relaaaaax," Lux drawled, putting his arms underneath Mia to keep her from sinking and freaking out even more than she already was. He hoped she wouldn't mind him touching her, since some girls were weird about that, but after all she had asked him not to let her sink. "Here, I'll keep holding you up, but just let yourself go limp so that you can sort of get the feel of it."
He figured once she relaxed with him holding her, he'd let go without telling her to show her she really could do it, since she seemed really unsure of herself.

She didn't mind him touching her at all, in fact, it was really reassuring. "Okay," she said, nodding and looking up at him with wide eyes. She shut them, and breathed out, trying to focus on being calm. She thought about sitting in her house by the fireplace, and watching out the window watching snow. Calm, peaceful, relaxing.
She kept her eyes shut, and kept thinking about good things that didn't freak her out, while breathing calmly, in and out, in and out.

Lux felt Mia melt into a state of calm relaxation, and smiled. While she had her eyes closed, he veeeeery carefully let her go and backed away without her even noticing. As expected, she remained floating peacefully without even realizing she was doing it. "How ya feeling about this?" he asked, amused.

Mia opened her eyes, expecting to look up into Lux's face, and was surprised when all she saw was the big blue sky. Then she noticed his hands weren't on her back and that she was floating totally on her own.
"I'm doing it!" she exclaimed happily, excited that she had learned. Of course, when she started getting all happy she started to sink again, but the fact was that she had done it! Yay Mia!
When she started to sink, she pulled her feet under her and stood, instead of letting herself sink all the way. "I did it!" she repeated, proud of herself.

"I knew you could," Lux told her, grinning. This girl was just too cute for her own good. It was absolutely adorable how excited she was about floating. "Try it completely on your own and then I'll show you...um..." What would be the next step after floating? "How toooooo...tread water I think."

It took a few tries, but now that Mia had more confidence, it was easier to do it again. "This is so cool. Who knew that people could float on water?" she asked, once she had successfully started to float again. "It's like, I should be sinking! I weigh too much to float!" She didn't get how if a rock would sink, she wouldn't.
"Thanks for teaching me this, Lux," she said, standing back up. "I'm so excited to show Cara."

Lux didn't know why people could float when rocks couldn't either, mostly because he didn't really care. He had been swimming his whole life, so he never stopped to think about it being weird or anything.
"Hey, no problem, you're fun to teach," Lux smiled. "That look you got on your face when you realized you could float on your own...I'd like to see it again."

"You're sweet," she said, her face lighting up. She smiled, tilting her head a little. "How do you tread water?" she asked, not knowing exactly what that was. She didn't get swimming at all, so all the terms were new to her.

"It's, uhm, it's like," Lux struggled to find the right words to explain treading water, "It's like...swimming, without going anywhere. Like swimming in place. D'you get it?" Probably not, since his explanation was pretty awful. "Here, I'll show you."
He made his way out into deeper water until it his feet just barely touched the bottom. He lifted his toes off the ground and treaded, just keeping his head above water. "You can't see, but my feet aren't touching the ground. It takes a little more work than just floating. You have to kick a little bit and use your arms."
He swam back over. "Wanna try?"

Mia bit her lip. "I thiiiiink I get it, but I'm not sure," she said, obviously a bit nervous about the new step. "Like, why would moving your feet keep you above the water?" She was curious about the whole process because she was so nervous and wanted to know the proper steps to make sure nothing bad would happen. Or something. You know.

"I dunno," Lux shrugged, "why does a bird flapping its wings keep it in the air? It doesn't matter why, just know that it does." He smiled at her reassuringly, since she still seemed nervous. "Trust me."
